I am loosely basing this off of
template. I can't really do everything to a T due to Anjay being, well... my first OC. So she doesn't have a "past self" or "sue past". This is Anjay all right here. This is what I got for her and these questions I feel will help me develop her character better and make me think of aspects I yet have dwell on. So without further adooooo lets start!~
1. Inspiration for Anjay
I have always been surrounded my many cultures. My mom was a nurse and living in a city where it was common for her to care for refugees and immigrants, I was able to expose myself to people and their cultures. I remember specifically when I was doing an internship at my mom's work I met a beautiful family and their newborn daughter. And that stuck out to me. I was able to see that girl grow up to be three before moving and she was so full of life. Anjay is basically inspired by their culture: Hindu and Assamese. I wanted to take the opportunity to learn more about India's culture and this was a way to express what I learned. Another reason I chose India as my area of interest for Anjay is because I just wanted to see a bit more diversity in the line up.
Anjay is actually a Male name of Hindu origin, and it means Unbeatable. I chose this name for Anjay because she is not a very traditional girl. She is blind for the most part and is virtually outcast in her home village, and I couldn't give her a feminine name because she would blend in. I also chose Anjay because the name meaning I feel characterizes my character well because despite the lack of help and her handicap, she has proven that she is willing to push forward and continue to beat the odds.
As for her appearance, I wanted to give her something more classic that could be easily translated to the Xiaolin style. The most extreme I went with her looks are her jaded green eyes, which are only that color to represent her partial blindness. She has shorter lashes, a more angular face, and long textured hair with the darker skin to boot. Aside from appearance, Anjay does have a bit of a mean streak. She was raised in the early 1700's by her adoptive parents and has very traditional values. She is a woman of faith and dedicates herself to enlightening her belief and wisdom. She believes in spiritual healing and is often found along the outskirts of her village closer to the wildlife. Her handicap prevents her from pursuing jobs and achieving a handful of daily tasks, and she often keeps to herself. Being even remotely sightless is a bad omen to the other villagers and they tend to avoid her, and in turn, she is mistreated or ignored. Her adoptive parents pity her more each passing day and to help secure her future try to sell her to a wealthier man...
2. How did Anjay meet the monks?
Which brings me to this! Anjay first met the monks while they were on an endeavor to retrieve a Shen Gong Wu. They had used the Sands of Time to travel back to this time period to uncover a new wu. Of course the Sands of Time replaced itself once they traveled back an Dojo was able to trace it back to the village. This fateful day, Anjay had been buying pottery and picked up the Sands of Time, as well as other hand spun trinkets, due do it's unique shapes. Raimundo is the one to find her and tries to reason with her, explaining the capabilities of the Wu and how dangerous it can be. Anjay was very skeptical of the reasoning but when the other monks jump in with the same story, Anjay agrees to give them back their wu but
only if she was able to go with them. The initial reaction was no but with Anjay holding their key back home they reluctantly agreed.
Anjay was then brought back to present day China. With her vision being blurry and monochromatic she quickly learned she was not in her usual surroundings and had to be escorted by Dojo around the temple. That is when she is introduced to Master Fung and where they have a lengthy talk about who she is, where she was from, and why she was at the temple. Kimiko was the one to overhear parts of the conversation and once she learned Anjay was sold out by her own guardians, she went to find her team mates and try to appeal to their better nature. When Kimiko explained the situation, Clay and Omi were more sympathetic to Anjay's story. Raimundo... not as much. He felt her disappearance would disrupt that part in history. After a small debate Rai was convinced enough to bring the matter up to Master Fung and got permission for Anjay to stay at the temple. Even though she was not a warrior, the monks felt obligated to help her out of her tough living situation. Within the night she was accommodated into a room, and although grateful, she chose not to talk to the others.
3. What is Anjay's relationship with the temple residents?
I can say Anjay's presence at the temple is... calm. Uh, to say the least. Uneventful. Because of her troubled past, Anjay is very private about her interests and opinions. The monks don't know a thing about her. Because of this, there is a lot of tension between the five when Anjay first settles into the temple.
Master Fung and Dojo: Anjay looks to these two for guidance. She appreciates Master Fung's wisdom and often seeks it during this time of adjustment. She uses Dojo as a means of helping her familiarize the temple layout and getting around. Anjay's vision problems lie in rod monochromacy, so she can't see any colors at all an has never been able to. With this handicap, Anjay also does not have perfect vision and often sees things as blurs and shadows. This makes it hard for her to familiarize her surroundings and at times she gets very frustrated. Dojo and Master Fung often see this self frustration, but Master Fung advises against Dojo being at her side at all times. As much as he appreciates Dojo wanting to help, he knows Anjay will never be satisfied until she learns how to get around herself. So instead of being her trusty Guide Dog, Dojo learns to let Anjay breathe and spends their time together telling stories. As exercises, he lets Anjay find her way to a different destination around the temple to meet with him. At first it would take a longer time to meet or Anjay wouldn't show up at all, but overtime she started to familiarize her surroundings and it became easier for her to navigate the temple. She thanks Master Fung and Dojo for pushing her to do her best. Her bond with them strengthens over time and she sees them both as the parents/mentors she never had.
Omi: The reason she first dislikes Omi is because of his blunt comments, swelling ego, and bolstering habits. When Anjay is first home at the temple, Omi makes it a must to try and get to know Anjay by bombarding her with personal questions about her sight and how she will benefit the team if she can not see. Not a good first impression. When Kimiko explains to Omi just how overbearing is statements can be, Omi slowly learns how to be more respectful in regards to her ailment. This does not stop him from encouraging Anjay to train with them, which also goes downhill. Needless to say Anjay never became a warrior, but she did pick up some chores around the temple and became another ear to lend at the temple. Omi and Anjay makes amends when he realizes the great amount of discipline Anjay possesses to try to push past her blindness and do the things she do.
"You may not ever possess the power of my friends or I, but you are still indeed a warrior."
Kimiko: Now contrary to popular belief, Anjay's strongest feelings of hatred were towards Kimiko. She despised Kimiko for eavesdropping on her personal conversation with Master Fung and telling everyone about her problems. She had initially labeled Kimiko as a "Mockell" and blatantly refused to associate with her. This did not fly well often because both women were hotheaded, and the hostility Anjay had toward Kimiko did not help the situation. It is during a conversation with Dojo where he points out Kimiko's eavesdropping helped secure a spot at the temple for her, and though he agrees it could of been handled differently, Kimiko's intentions were good. Once Anjay learns to forgive Kimiko for the mistake, the two become good acquaintances and eventually friends. To make things even, Kimiko tells Anjay all about her family and her troubles at the temple when she first arrive. Once that is out of the way, Kimiko teaches Anjay all the wonders of the internet and phone service, and in turn Anjay exchanges her knowledge of village folklore and hand crafted goods.
"I forgive you... but since I know about your family, it's only right I tell you about mine."
Clay: Was the most tolerable for Anjay. When first coming to the temple, she hated Clay's obnoxious eating behaviors and how often he apologized to her for little to no reason. She felt Clay tried too hard to please everybody, and his friendly hand was not one she was used to. She would shy away from even a handshake, not wanting to touch the hand of a stranger who could take advantage of her. Although there was nothing wrong between them, (like Dojo) Clay had to learn to give Anjay her space and slowly gain her trust. He won this trust when Anjay realized he comes from a more country background an she learned all about his life on the farm. They bonded over animals as Anjay was fond of Nature, and Clay often helped her with chores that dealt with more delicate situations (such as washing the white pants alone) and that's generally what their friendship became based around for a long time. It was a niche they both fit into, and she found it easier to talk to Clay about her own days taking care of cattle and a handful of her other chores. They started to stitch their friendship together when Clay once found Anjay washing the clothes and saw she had stained many of the white articles of clothing pink. In attempt to salvage the clothes, Clay tries to help her rid of the color but in the end comes to no avail. Anjay offers to make new garments to compensate for her mistake, an Clay, as well as Kimiko, offers to help.
"Now I ain't much for stitchin', but I can at least help ya put things together."
Raimundo: Now when it came to Raimundo, she had no respect for him. Since this takes place between Xiaolin and Chronicles, Raimundo is the official leader upon her arrival. And she is not impressed. Despite the wisdom he has and his abilities to control wind, Anjay does not find him fit to be leader and despises how Raimundo demands respect from her simply due to his position of power. Anjay and Raimundo often got into spats about decision making or even opinions about one another and needless to say feelings were often hurt. It is when Anjay witnesses Raimundo on his own one day training where she realizes just how much of an impact her words had on him. She realizes that by judging Raimundo that she was reflecting the behavior she had received among the others in her past, and dislikes how the bullied became the bully. To mend ways with Raimundo, she stops criticizing him as often and learns to be more open minded about his decisions. Raimundo is skeptical and at one point confronts her, and this is where she and Raimundo have a true heart to heart about one another. This is where they learn they have more in common with one another than they realized and start mending their friendship. Raimundo is the last person Anjay reconciles with, and because she gave Raimundo the most emotional damage it took longer for them to be okay. Once their friendship is better, Anjay gives Raimundo a bracelet as a token of their mutual respect for one another. Raimundo teases Anjay about it at first, but once he sees how much this means to her, he starts wearing the bracelet beneath his sweatband as a sign of acceptance an forgiveness.
"You promise this thing wasn't cursed with evil Heylin magic?" .... "You're not half bad, Jay."
4. What are Anjay's fears?
Anjay's fears come to light during one of Raimundo's pranks. He used the Shadow of Fear to get into Anjay's head during a nightmare, and he wanted to see what 'silly fear' she possessed. This is where Raimundo learned Anjay's fear was losing her sight altogether. In the dream Anjay was surrounded in black and was being teased and yanked at like a doll from one side to another. What was once a prank made Raimundo feel guilty as he heard his own taunting voice among the others, some of the other voices hurling insults or shameful opinions about why she was blind. and he left right then and there. The dream was all too real for him as he could identify with some of it, and after that he chose not to mess with her anymore.
5. Does Anjay possess powers? If so what is her ability/element? If not, why?
Anjay does possess an element, but not a physical one. Because of her religious views and mission, she embodies the element of Spirit. She is by no means a warrior, and she can not fight or summon her element like her friends, but her iron will allows her to believe in others when no one else does, and gives her the patience and ability to care for minor wounds. She is able to heal bruises and scrapes, and come cuts to an extent. She is basically adopted as the temple nurse and cares for any minor wounds
received during practice or fights.
6. Does Anjay develop feelings for any of the characters?
Yes. She develops feelings for Raimundo as they start to get to know one another better and despite the attraction, Anjay refuses to let Raimundo into that part of her life. She knows Kimiko likes Rai and does not want to get in the middle of that. She was never sure if Raimundo returned her feelings in the first place and she prefers to keep it that way. She still likes Raimundo, but she believes if it was meant to be things will just happen. At one point she thinks she develops feelings for Clay as well, but it buds into a friendship where she thinks of him as a brother. Oops.
Also remember kids; Anjay is blind. Therefore she isn't basing her crushes on appearance but personality~
7. What are Anjay's weaknesses? Any character flaws?
... Did I mention she's blind and stubbornly independent?
8. And last but not least! Random fact about Anjay- Go!
She does not like milk chocolate. She finds it overbearingly sweet and dislikes it on and with everything. She prefers dark and white chocolate, and she only prefers white chocolate when in a form of dessert. She is also a fan of fairy tales and folklore so she went crazy when she learned about Audio Tapes.
And I taaag... my watchers really. I only have ten and since I refuse to double tag and don't know much about everybody, I'm not choosing the character you do or anything.
